The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division Female Netball Team has been crowned champions of the North East Regional Sports League after an impressive campaign in Kumi District, earning qualification for the National Netball Playoffs.
The Moroto-based side emerged victorious after outperforming 12 teams from across the North Eastern region, including teams from Teso, Bukedea, Karamoja, Ngora, and Soroti City. The team maintained an unbeaten run throughout the tournament, winning both the semi-final and final matches before defeating Kumi Diamonds 31–15 in the championship game held at Kumi Municipal Grounds.
Speaking on behalf of the Commander of the 3 Infantry Division, Maj Gen Wilberforce Sserunkuma, the Deputy Division Commander, Brig Gen Kyangungu, commended the players for their resilience, determination, and commitment to excellence.
He said that the team’s success was particularly remarkable given that some of its original members had been deployed on operations and military courses.
“You went to Kumi and did more than compete; you dominated. This trophy is a testament to your discipline, teamwork, and endurance. You represented the Division with skill, respect, and the fighting spirit for which the UPDF is known,” Brig Gen Kyangungu said.
He added that the victory reflected the values of the UPDF both on and off the battlefield and applauded the coaches, team management, and support staff for their contribution to the team’s success.
“You have raised the flag of the 3 Infantry Division high. Maintain this standard and continue striving for excellence in all that you do,” he urged.
During the ceremony, the Division Administrative Officer, Col Richard Butungi, described the achievement as a symbol of discipline, sacrifice, and teamwork.
“This trophy represents the dedication and determination of our female netball team. It will be displayed at the Division Headquarters as a reminder that excellence in sports reflects the same excellence we expect in military service,” Col Butungi said.
Team captain Pte Kimono Winnie dedicated the victory to the entire squad and all those who supported them throughout the tournament.
“This trophy belongs to every player who trained hard, every coach who guided us, and every soldier who supported us. We played as one team and one Division, and we are proud to bring this victory home. We are determined to defend our title,” she said.
The trophy handover ceremony was witnessed by senior and junior officers, militants, and members of the Division leadership, who joined in celebrating a victory that further reinforced the 3 Infantry Division’s reputation for discipline, unity, and excellence both in military service and sports.
