The UPDF protects Uganda’s interests at home and abroad, providing a safe and secure environment in which all Ugandan citizens can live and prosper.
The mandate is derived from the Constitution of Republic of Uganda 1995 (as amended). In accordance with Articles 208 and 209, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) is established and mandated to carry out the following functions:
- To preserve and defend the sovereignty and interior integrity of Uganda.
- To co-operate with civilian authority in emergency situations in cases of natural disasters.
- To foster harmony and understanding between the defence forces and civilians.
- To engage in productive activities for the development of Uganda.
