The Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Hon Dr Chris Baryomunsi, launched a football match between the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and Kanungu district select team as part of the 45th Tarehe Sita Anniversary celebrations.
The match, held in Kanungu, aimed to promote unity and strengthen relations between the UPDF and the local community.
In his remarks, Dr Baryomunsi emphasized the importance of community support for the security forces, saying, “It’s from the community that the soldiers were drawn, and without the support of each other, there won’t exist security personnel in the country.”
He also highlighted the role of sports in bringing people together, stating, “It’s only through sports that all people of different caliber unite; therefore, let the people of Kanungu use the opportunity to know the military better.”
Brig Gen Tweheyo, representing the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba thanked the community for their warm hospitality and acceptance to play with UPDF, saying, “Our relations and civil-military cooperation is key and forever shall be guarded jealously.”
The host team, Kanungu select, emerged victorious, winning the match 2-0. They were awarded medals and a trophy for their win.
The event aimed to promote unity and camaraderie between the UPDF and the local community, and was seen as a successful step in strengthening their relationship.
