In a powerful display of unity and regional cooperation, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) came together on Saturday, 31 May, for a historic football match held at Kyamate Playground in Ntungamo Municipality. The event drew thousands of civilians and military personnel, underscoring the growing camaraderie between the two forces.

The UPDF 2 Infantry Division narrowly triumphed over the RDF 5 Infantry Division in a dramatic 4–3 penalty shootout, claiming the trophy in what was described as the first-ever “Proximity Game” between the two neighbouring militaries. Despite the competitive spirit, the central message was one of unity. “There was no winner or loser at Kyamate playground,” remarked Lt Gen (Rtd) Jim Owoyesigire, the Chief Guest and former Uganda Air Force Commander. “We all won.”
The day began with a vibrant joint march through Ntungamo town, led by the UPDF 2 Division brass band. The football match brought together senior officers and personnel from both forces, including Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi (UPDF), Brig Gen Pascal Muhizi (RDF), Brig Gen Richard Karemire (UPDF), Brig Gen Emmanuel Shillingi (UPDF), and Col Emmanuel Ruzindana (RDF).

Lt Gen (Rtd) Owoyesigire praised the choice of Kyamate for its deep historical resonance. “It is here in Kyamate where the search for truth by His Excellency Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni started nearly 70 years ago. That struggle, of course, was supported by many from your country, including His Excellency Gen Paul Kagame,” he said.
He highlighted the enduring ties between Uganda and Rwanda, forged through shared struggles for liberation. “In our struggles for freedom and democracy, gallant men and women from both countries fought side by side. These are unbreakable bonds. President Kagame and many Rwandans played a key role in our liberation, just as Uganda was instrumental in Rwanda’s struggle,” he added.
Describing the match as “symbolic of our ongoing cooperation,” Lt Gen Owoyesigire emphasised the importance of grassroots initiatives. “It must be visible on the ground, in fields, entertainment venues, and communities like Kyamate and Musanze,” he noted.

Maj Gen Muhanguzi and Brig Gen Muhizi thanked the Presidents of Uganda and Rwanda, as well as the Chiefs of Defence Forces from both nations, for their unwavering support in fostering military and diplomatic harmony.

The day’s events also included the planting of commemorative trees to promote environmental awareness, alongside a free medical outreach led by the UPDF 2 Division medical team. Partnering with the Ntungamo Red Cross, local health authorities, and the Rukungiri Blood Bank, the camp offered services such as HIV counselling, Hepatitis and malaria screening, blood pressure checks, and blood donation.
Among the dignitaries in attendance were Ntungamo RDC Mr. Isiah Kanyamahane, Woman MP Mrs. Kamateneti Bata, Mayor Mr. Jackjex Kafureka, Assistant District Health Officer Ms. Beatrice Chemusto, religious leaders, senior officers, and local community leaders.
Also present were Brig Gen Sam Kakuru, Brig Gen (Rtd) Tumwebaze Okello, and Mr. Savimbi, the Patriotic League of Uganda spokesperson for Western Uganda.
The RDF will host the next round of joint sports activities in Rwanda, continuing the momentum of military collaboration and people-centred engagement.
