The 3 Infantry Division of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has celebrated its outstanding performance at the 17th edition of the CDF Cup 2025, held at the Armoured Division headquarters in Masaka City.
The victorious teams received a hero’s welcome at Moroto Army Barracks, followed by a sports dinner at Destination Normand Africa (DNA) in Moroto Municipality.
While addressing officers, players and stakeholders, the Division Commander, Maj Gen Wilberforce Karate Sserunkuma, praised the teams for their remarkable performance and urged them to maintain momentum as they prepare for the 18th edition in 2026. “I am proud of the great performance achieved amidst the ongoing disarmament operations,” Maj Gen Sserunkuma said, adding that sports not only improve fitness and combat readiness but also help strengthen relations with the community.
He further directed the newly inaugurated sports committee to design a dedicated sports budget and launch resource mobilisation efforts to nurture talent and enhance training in drills, range and other disciplines.
Maj Gen Sserunkuma also commended the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor on Special Operations, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, for his support and leadership in sustaining the annual rotational sports event.
Col Allan Kyangungu, Deputy Division Commander and Patron, attributed the teams’ success to strong leadership and command, noting that their grit and cohesion had earned them the nickname “Warriors.” He, however, reminded troops that their primary duty remains service as soldiers.
Brigade Commanders Col Wilson Barigye of the 407 Infantry Brigade and Col Joseph Patrick Ocen of the 106 Artillery Brigade thanked the athletes for their dedication and encouraged them to build on the experience as they target victory in 2026.
Maj Joshua Kato, head of the sports contingent, expressed gratitude to the Division leadership and commended the teams for their resilience. The 3 Infantry Division returned with four major trophies, including:
Silver medal in men’s football (first runners-up)
Men’s football top scorer award (Pte Opiny Alfred)
Best shooter in men’s match two
Men’s football Most Valuable Player (Pte Okello Raymond)
The netball team was also recognised for reaching the quarterfinals, while the drill team won first place under Land Forces and secured the cane stick award in May 2025.
The celebrations drew Brigade Commanders, district officials, security officers from sister agencies and other stakeholders.
