Ahead of World Tourism Day the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces 5 Division Commander, Maj Gen Keith Katungi, has underscored the critical role of security in shaping Uganda’s appeal as a tourist destination.
UPDF 5th Division Commander representing the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), “Security spanning physical, human, property, food, and health security plays an important role in determining a country’s attractiveness to tourists,” Maj Gen Katungi said.
He made the remarks during a panel discussion at the World Tourism Day Regional Conference in Arua City, hosted at Le Confidential Hotel, where he represented the Chief Defence Forces.
The conference, organised by the Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities in partnership with Arua City Council and the private sector, focused on Sustainable Tourism Development in the West Nile region.
He emphasised that mitigating tourism risks requires moving beyond traditional approaches through coordinated government efforts across agencies. “It is through bridging interagency disconnects that we shall save government resources from duplication and sell Uganda as an unequalled attractive tourism destination with an atmosphere of peace and tranquillity,” said Maj Gen Katungi.
The event has brought together tourism stakeholders to discuss pressing challenges and explore opportunities for promoting tourism while ensuring safety and sustainable development in the region.
