The Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) and the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) joined the nation in commemorating the 36th Heroes Day Anniversary at Lyantonde Technical Institute Playgrounds in Kaliiro Town Council, Lyantonde District.
Held under the theme “The Legacy and Ideals of Our Heroes: A Memorable Inspiration,” the event was presided over by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF.
In his address, President Museveni paid tribute to the valiant fighters of the resistance struggle and the supportive communities, especially in Lyantonde. “I want to salute the fighters who stood firm for the resistance movement for their dedication and bravery. I also want to salute the people of this area who supported us in the struggle,” he said.
The President outlined plans to enhance medical support for veterans, citing a shift from costly private hospitals to the more sustainable Entebbe Grade B Hospital. “I have enriched Nakasero Hospital. I’ve now told my people that everything should be put in Entebbe Grade B Hospital so that my fellow fighters are treated there, because the money we are spending at Nakasero is too much,” he said.
He also reflected on earlier efforts to recognise the sacrifices made during the war. “After stabilising the country, I invited 800 leaders in 2008 and gave each one a token of Shs5 million for their role during the war. We also gave Shs1 million to each supporter who was not a leader. This was long before the current Parish Development Model (PDM),” he said.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment to veterans’ welfare, President Museveni announced a review of the Ministry of Luweero Triangle and Rwenzori budget. He suggested a shift in housing support, proposing the provision of construction materials, such as iron sheets and cement, while families contribute labour and bricks. “This way, we can solve one problem at a time, instead of spreading resources too thin,” he said.
Hon Alice Kaboyo, State Minister for Luweero Triangle and Rwenzori Affairs, expressed gratitude to the President and highlighted achievements in supporting war-affected communities. “In the Financial Year 2024/2025, we have supported over 300 income-generating enterprises through the Micro-Projects Programme,” she said.
She also praised the initiative to establish Police Posts in every sub-county, noting its potential to enhance local security and foster community-based economic activities.
Minister Kaboyo spoke of the Pre-Heroes Day activities introduced three years ago, including medical camps, youth sports galas, tree planting, and inter-denominational memorial prayers. “These activities aim to raise awareness of our history and pass it on to the youth who did not experience the struggle,” she said.
Fifty individuals received national awards during the celebrations. Among them was Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Sam Okiding, who was honoured with the prestigious Kabalega Star Medal.
The event drew a wide array of dignitaries, including First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports Hon Janet Kataha Museveni, Vice President Maj (Rtd) Jessica Alupo, NRM Vice Chairman Al Hajji Moses Kigongo, First Deputy Prime Minister Rt Hon Rebecca Kadaga, cabinet ministers, religious leaders, senior UPDF officers, members of the diplomatic corps, and thousands of Ugandans.
