The Commander of the Air Force, Lieutenant General Charles Okidi, has urged officer cadets to embrace patience, discipline, professional competence and integrity as they prepare for commissioning and greater responsibilities in the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).
Lt Gen Okidi made the remarks while delivering a lecture of opportunity on behalf of the Chief of Defence Forces and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, (General Muhoozi Kainerugaba), at the Uganda Military Academy, Kabamba.
Drawing on his 36 years of military service, Lt Gen Okidi emphasised that career progression requires dedication, endurance and continuous self-development.
Speaking under the theme “The Long March of a Flying Commander,” he reflected on his career as a pilot and the importance of balancing technical expertise with the demands of military service.
He described military service as a calling that requires commitment beyond the pursuit of employment.
“Joining the force is a calling, not a job. If you joined looking for a job, then you are lost,” he said.
Lt Gen Okidi recounted his pilot training and experience flying four different types of aircraft as a captain, including aircraft used to fly the President.
He urged the cadets to develop professional competence, make sound decisions and remain accountable as they advance through the ranks.
He also cautioned them against becoming preoccupied with rank or comparing their progress with that of colleagues, advising them to focus on their duties and remain patient throughout their careers.
“Be patient, be focused. Do not despair or become frustrated. God’s timing is the best. Do not think about the ranks,” he advised.
The 278 Officer Cadets are expected to be commissioned next week, marking their transition into Officer Corp of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).
