The Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division, Brig Gen Michael Walaka Hyeroba, has urged troops to uphold discipline, professionalism and continuous training as the Division consolidates peace and security across its area of responsibility.
Brig Gen Hyeroba made the remarks during his first official baraza with officers and troops at the Division Headquarters in Moroto.
Brig Gen Hyeroba told the troops that discipline and professionalism remain fundamental to the effectiveness and credibility of the UPDF, urging them to understand their responsibilities and adhere to the rules and regulations governing military service.
“You joined an institution which has rules and regulations, and you must know your role in the UPDF,” he said.
Brig Gen Hyeroba said his command would focus on consolidating peace and stability across the Karamoja, Teso and Elgon sub-regions while ensuring that the UPDF continues to protect civilians and their property.
In a related development, the Division Commander announced the UPDF’s full support for the forthcoming Ateker Cultural Gala, describing culture as an important instrument for consolidating peace and strengthening relations among communities that share historical and cultural ties.
“The Ateker reunion is not just culture, it is a peace and security platform. We fought to pacify this region, and culture is now consolidating that peace,” Brig Gen Hyeroba said.
The six-day cultural festival is expected to attract more than 30,000 participants from across East Africa, bringing together communities including the Turkana from Kenya, Toposa from South Sudan, Nyangatom from Ethiopia, and the Karimojong, Iteso, Langi and Jie from Uganda.
He called on troops to cooperate with sister security forces, remain disciplined and maintain a professional posture throughout the celebrations.
Among the activities planned for the gala is the Hunger Run, a charity initiative scheduled for September 9, 2026, aimed at mobilising resources to provide food assistance to vulnerable families affected by the prolonged drought in Karamoja.
Brig Gen Hyeroba encouraged the troops to support the initiative and participate in activities that contribute to the welfare of communities within the Division’s area of responsibility.
He said the gala provides an opportunity not only to celebrate the shared heritage of Ateker communities, but also to strengthen social cohesion, promote peaceful coexistence and reinforce the gains made in restoring security in the region.
The briefing was attended by senior and junior officers, including the Deputy Division Commander, Col Winston Mugarura, Brigade commanders, departmental heads and administration officers.
