More than 200 veterans from the Western Region converged at the Mountain Infantry Division headquarters in Muhooti, Fort Portal, to elect a representative to the Wazalendo SACCO (WSACCO) Annual General Meeting (AGM) and other engagements concerning the welfare and operations of the SACCO, where Lance Corporal Kato Peter emerged victorious.
The election, which brought together veterans from the region’s three sectors of Kisoro, Mbarara and Fort Portal, was aimed at strengthening representation and ensuring that the concerns of retired members are effectively presented and followed up within WSACCO structures.
Brigadier General (Rtd) Philip Mugarura, the Operation Wealth Creation Regional Coordinator, commended the veterans for participation in the election, describing their unity and continued contribution to society as a positive example.
He encouraged the veterans to maintain healthy lifestyles and engage in productive projects that can improve their livelihoods and wellbeing during retirement.
Mugarura further urged them to continue being good ambassadors in their communities and to use the skills and experience acquired during military service to contribute to development.
Lt Col Akasius Mpabaisi, the WSACCO Political Commissar and head of the delegation, explained that the meeting was convened to elect a representative who would ensure that veterans have a voice in WSACCO engagements.
He informed veterans who had left WSACCO that the opportunity remained open for them to rejoin the SACCO and continue benefiting from its services.
L/Cpl Kato thanked fellow veterans for entrusting him with the responsibility and pledged to ensure effective representation of their concerns.
The function was attended by the Mountain Infantry Division Political Commissar, Public Information Officer and Division Sergeant Major.
