The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) on Thursday bade farewell to the late Brig Gen Winston Byaruhanga during a burial ceremony held at his ancestral home in Rukoni Village, Kibatsi Sub-county, Kajara County, Ntungamo District.
Representing the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, the Commander of the 2nd Infantry Division, Maj Gen Paul Muhanguzi, described the late Brig Gen Byaruhanga as a committed, resilient and professional officer whose service inspired many both within and outside military circles.
“Brig Gen Winston Byaruhanga was calm, firm and highly professional in the execution of his duties. His dedication earned him admiration from his seniors, peers and subordinates alike,” Maj Gen Muhanguzi said.
He added that the late general devoted his life to serving the country with loyalty, sacrifice and integrity.
“We join the family and friends in mourning this fallen comrade who leaves behind a legacy of professionalism, patriotism, loyalty and selfless service to the nation,” he added.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Lt Gen Joseph Musanyufu, who described the deceased as a close friend and colleague, said the country had lost a gallant officer and patriot.
“Brig Gen Byaruhanga was a dependable officer and a man of integrity whose service to the country will always be remembered. He was approachable, wise and deeply committed to the well-being of others,” Lt Gen Musanyufu noted.
He further praised the late general’s leadership qualities, saying his counsel, friendship and patriotism greatly inspired those who worked with him.
“To the family, I extend my deepest condolences during this difficult time. May you find strength and comfort in the impactful life he lived and the legacy he leaves behind,” he said.
Speaking emotionally during the burial service, the widow, Mrs Kellen Byaruhanga, thanked the UPDF, the church and all mourners for standing with the family during the difficult moment.
“He was a loving husband who loved me and his family deeply. Even during his sickness, he remained caring and strong. I remain with a heavy heart and do not know how life will be without him,” she said.
Brig Gen Winston Byaruhanga passed away in India where he had been receiving medical treatment.
During his distinguished military career, he served in various capacities including as a Military Advisor in London and Juba, Commandant of the Junior Command and Staff College in Jinja, and Uganda’s Defence Attaché at the Embassy of Uganda in the United Arab Emirates.
The late Brig Gen Byaruhanga will be remembered for his dedicated service, discipline and unwavering commitment to Uganda and the UPDF.
The ceremony was attended by UPDF Generals, Senior and and Junior Officers, religious leaders, family members, friends and mourners who gathered to honour the life and service of the fallen General.
