Brigadier General William Beinomugisha, Commandant of the Military Police under the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), has urged troops to channel their money into income-generating ventures to safeguard their financial security.
He made the remarks during an inspection and assessment visit to Makindye Barracks and other units under the Military Police Brigade. The visit reviewed combat readiness, welfare, discipline, healthcare, strength, desertion, and the prevailing political climate.
Brig Gen Beinomugisha underscored the importance of effective division of labour, urging officers to take up their supervisory and implementation roles with diligence. He also commended troops for maintaining good relations with neighbouring communities. “I have not received any complaints from civilians,” he said, attributing Uganda’s peace and stability in part to such positive interactions.
The Commandant reminded the force of their responsibility in guarding key strategic installations in Kampala and providing security for very important persons, praising officers and men for upholding this legacy. He further congratulated recently promoted junior and senior non-commissioned officers, noting that every rank carries responsibility through appointment.
On health, he emphasised the need to guard against sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS. “Keeping healthy against sexually transmitted diseases like HIV/AIDS and other sexual issues is very vital if you are to enjoy the new promotion,” he cautioned.
Brig Gen Beinomugisha advised soldiers to avoid risky behaviours and poor financial management, warning against misuse of borrowed money. “Retirement demands a smart brain,” he remarked.
He also called on troops to continue supporting the leadership of President and Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF, H.E. Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, cautioning against divisive influences. “Avoid criminals who may divert you to support wrong elements who don’t know where Uganda came from,” he said, urging adherence to purposeful leadership.
