UPDF 3 Infantry Division Conducts Psychosocial Training For Personnel In Moroto

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division has conducted a psychosocial training aimed at strengthening the mental resilience and operational readiness of its officers and soldiers.

The training, held at the Division Headquarters in Moroto, focused on the prevention and management of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), stress management, and promoting psychological wellbeing among troops.

Speaking during the opening of the lecture, the Commander of the 3 Infantry Division, Major General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, urged officers and soldiers to take psychosocial training seriously, noting that personnel at all levels of command are exposed to conditions that can lead to PTSD.

“Mental and physical health go together. We must be receptive to the facilitators’ message and understand PTSD so that we are not caught unaware by its triggers,” Brig Gen Sserunkuma said.

Maj Gen Sserunkuma thanked the team of mental health professionals for conducting the training and encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained in supporting both themselves and their colleagues.

The Deputy Commander of the Division, Brig Gen Allan, urged participants to avoid preventable sources of stress that could contribute to psychological disorders.

He advised troops to make responsible personal decisions and remain vigilant against situations that could negatively affect their mental wellbeing.

Clinical Psychologist Ms. Rachael Namuganza encouraged soldiers to seek help whenever they experience emotional or psychological challenges instead of suffering in silence.

She urged personnel to communicate with their immediate commanders and colleagues, stressing that early intervention is essential in preventing stress from developing into severe mental health conditions.

The lecture was attended by the Deputy Division Commander, Heads of Departments, officers and soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Division, as well as military students undertaking refresher courses in Artillery and Ideology.

As part of the outreach programme, the psychosocial team also conducted mental health education sessions at Moroto Primary School.
