Thousands of Ugandans today turned out in force at Kololo Independence Grounds for the national charity run held to mark the 52nd birthday of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
This year’s event was conducted under the theme: “Run for Charity, Run for Hope.”
Drawing participants from every region of the country, the run brought together political leaders, religious figures, members of the security forces and civilians in a collective effort to support orphans and persons with disabilities.
The Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Rt Hon Thomas Tayebwa, officiated as Chief Runner and Chief Guest.
He flagged off the Gen MK 52 Birthday Run on behalf of the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and delivered a message on the CDF’s behalf.
In the message, the CDF expressed appreciation to all Ugandans, organisers and participants for supporting this year’s cause, emphasising that the initiative reflects the spirit of solidarity and national responsibility.
He commended the widespread participation from districts and regions across the country, noting that the run had evolved into a truly national exercise that showcases the unity Uganda aspires to uphold.
He further extended gratitude to security agencies, volunteers and service providers for ensuring the smooth and secure conduct of the event.
Representing the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs, the Minister of State for Defence in charge of Veteran Affairs, Hon Huda Oleru, highlighted the significance of the run in promoting discipline, teamwork and resilience — core values upheld by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF).
She noted that sport continues to serve as a unifying factor that transcends social and cultural differences while contributing to national transformation.
The Minister further commended the UPDF for its continued role in safeguarding the country, emphasising that the prevailing peace and stability enable Ugandans to participate in development-oriented activities such as the charity run.
More than just a celebration, the birthday run stood as a national movement of generosity and hope.
Funds raised are set to support orphans and persons with disabilities, reflecting a deliberate commitment to uplifting the most vulnerable in society.
The event was attended by several senior government and military officials, including the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Hon Okello Oryem; the Minister of Security, Hon Maj Gen (Rtd) Jim Muhwezi; the State Minister for Micro Finance Hon Haruna Kasolo, the Under Secretary of Finance and Administration Mrs Edith Buturo; the Deputy Chief of Defence Forces, Lt Gen Sam Okiding; the Commander Land Force, Lt Gen Kayanja Muhanga; and the Commander Reserve Force, Lt Gen Charles Otema.
