UPDF Honours Brig Gen Kaganda’s Legacy of Service

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has paid tribute to Brigadier General (Retired) John Mary Kaganda, who passed away on September 7, 2025 at Hoima Hospital. The respected General Officer, who was on September 11, 2025 laid to rest at his ancestral home in Kihenda village – Hoima District, was celebrated for his unwavering dedication and pivotal role in restoring peace and security in Uganda.

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the UPDF, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, described the Officer as a historical leader. “His version of leadership will always be a reference for future generations,” read in part a condolence message by the CDF that was delivered through Maj Gen Leopold Kyanda.

The CDF said that Brig Gen Kaganda joined the NRA/UPDF on November 15, 1981 and went on to serve in several key command and staff appointments, consistently demonstrating commitment, resilience and professionalism. His contribution to the UPDF left an enduring legacy.

Gen Muhoozi emphasized the contribution of the Late Brig Gen Kaganda in training and mentoring of countless officers and militants in the UPDF, placing strong emphasis on healthy living and physical fitness. “His passing is a very sad story for all of us who worked with him,” said the CDF. Gen Muhoozi noted that the UPDF fraternity would greatly miss Brig Gen Kaganda’s “wisdom, courage, counsel and inspiration”, adding, “MAY THE ALMIGHTY GOD REST HIS SOUL IN ETERNAL PEACE.”

Hon Grace Mary Mugasa Akiiki, Minister of State for Public Service and Chief Mourner, encouraged Ugandans to emulate the discipline of the late officer, describing his service as a model of excellence. She urged parents to allow their children to join the UPDF, commending it as a professional force anchored on discipline, patriotism, and pro-people ideology.

The CDF extended condolences and assistance to the bereaved family, with Maj Gen Leopold Kyanda delivering the message on his behalf. The UPDF also contributed towards all the burial expenses.

The burial marked by eleven gun salute and attended by civil leaders, UPDF generals, senior and junior officers, militants, members of sister security organs, and family members and friends from far and near places, reflected the high esteem in which Brig Gen (Rtd) Kaganda was held and his lasting place in Uganda’s military history.
