Ugandan female peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU) in Somalia have been encouraged to demonstrate resilience, discipline, and cooperation in their mission.
Lt Col Peter Ruyogoza Barigye, Commanding Officer of UNGU, stressed the importance of gender equality and teamwork during a meeting at the unit’s Mogadishu headquarters. He called on female soldiers to work professionally alongside male colleagues, reaffirming his dedication to ensuring “everyone feels respected, valued, and supported.”
Major Topista Opar Giramia, the Gender and Female Engagement Team (FET) Officer, said such dialogues improve mission effectiveness while fostering an inclusive and professional environment.
The meeting was attended by UNGU Deputy Commander Maj Jacob Gowan and other senior officers.
