Illegal Firearm Recovered, Two Suspects Arrested at Uganda–South Sudan Border

Security forces have arrested two individuals and recovered an illegal firearm following a joint operation by the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) and Uganda Police Force.

The arrest occurred at around 10:00 a.m. on Friday, 1 August 2025, at Waligo Checkpoint in Lamwo District, as the suspects attempted to cross into South Sudan.

The primary suspect, identified as Okunga Isaac, 27, a resident of Akor Village, Adoko Kome Parish in Lira District, was found in possession of an illegal submachine gun (SMG) with serial number 25456 and a magazine containing five rounds of ammunition.

He was travelling on a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UEY 428G, which was being ridden by Lokoroma Gabriel, a resident of Pobel Village, Lamwo Town Council. Both men were immediately taken into custody.

The suspects are currently being held at Bravo Battalion Headquarters in Ngomoromo, awaiting transfer to the police for further investigations and legal action.

Lt Col Mubangizi Ipolito, the Brigade Commander of 1 DUMISHA Brigade, warned that individuals found in illegal possession of firearms will face prosecution. He praised the security forces for their vigilance and urged them to remain alert in safeguarding the border.

Joint operations are continuing to register significant achievements in disrupting criminal activity and promoting peace and stability along the Uganda–South Sudan border
