The newly elected Board of Directors and Supervisory Board of Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (WSACCO) officially assumed office following their election at the just concluded 20th Annual General Meeting in Jinja on 31 March 2026.
The handover ceremony took place at the SACCO headquarters in Kiwatule.
While presiding over the ceremony, the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Lieutenant General Sam Kavuma, commended the outgoing Board for its dedicated service and achievements during its tenure. He urged them to remain active ambassadors of the SACCO and continue promoting its values within their professional duties.
“You have left office, but you have not left Wazalendo. You remain the right people to market the SACCO,” Lt Gen Kavuma said.
He called on the incoming leadership to work closely with management to ensure smooth and efficient member service delivery and underscored the importance of maintaining a cordial working relationship between the Board and management, which he said has been key to the SACCO’s growth.
Lt Gen Kavuma cautioned that while the SACCO continues to grow, new risks associated with expansion must be carefully managed. He stressed the need to safeguard the institution, warning that poor governance or weak controls could undermine service delivery and pose broader risks.
The Chairperson of the Supervisory Board, Brigadier General Justus Rukundo, equally commended the outgoing Board for its exemplary service. He said that the Supervisory Board’s role is to protect members’ interests, adding that this mandate had been effectively supported by the outgoing leadership.
Speaking on behalf of the outgoing Board, Col Allan Kitanda expressed appreciation to the UPDF leadership for the opportunity to serve members of WSACCO. He thanked both the Board leadership and management for their teamwork and support, urging the incoming team to always prioritise institutional interests over individual considerations.
On behalf of the incoming Board, Brig Gen Peter Gaitano Omola expressed gratitude to the UPDF leadership for the trust bestowed upon him and his colleagues. He noted his long association with the SACCO since its early days, recalling initial resistance to its formation before its benefits became evident to members.
“I am among those who joined the SACCO at its inception. At the time, there was some resistance within the forces, but I later appreciated its impact and became deeply passionate about it,” he said.
He paid tribute to the outgoing leadership, particularly the Board Chairman, for what he described as exemplary service, and pledged to uphold the SACCO’s legacy of integrity and growth.
The newly elected Board of Directors is chaired by Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, with Brig Gen Peter Omola as Vice Chairperson, Col James Okiring as Treasurer, and Maj Mariam Kagoro representing gender interests.
Regional representation includes Capt Dathan Bunanukye (Western Region), Capt Isaac Bisaalu (Central Region), Capt Nathan Mwebasa (Northern Region), WOII Osuku Peter (West Nile), and WOII Bashaija Wilber (Eastern Region).
