Operation Wealth Creation Boosts Ghetto Mothers’ SACCO In Gulu With UGX 8 Million

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 4 Infantry Division Commander, Major General Felix Busizoori, has handed over a donation worth Uganda Shillings Eight million to a Savings and Credit Cooperative Organisation (SACCO) formed by ghetto mothers in Pece-Laro Division. The SACCO brings together women engaged in income-generating activities such as poultry farming and informal trade, including the sale of foodstuffs.

The donation from the Chief Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation, General Caleb Akandwanaho, popularly known as Salim Saleh, is part of broader efforts under Operation Wealth Creation aimed at uplifting vulnerable groups and promoting grassroots economic development.

The beneficiaries, many of whom had previously been trading along the streets, were left without a source of income following the enforcement of trade order regulations that removed them from informal roadside vending. With limited alternatives, the women struggled to sustain their families, prompting the Division Commander’s intervention to support them in establishing a more stable and dignified source of livelihood.

While handing over the donation, Maj Gen Busizoori underscored the critical role women play in sustaining families and communities, often under challenging conditions. He said that economic empowerment of women is key to improving household welfare and fostering social stability.

“This support is intended to strengthen your SACCO and improve your livelihoods. Women are the pillars of our society, and their empowerment benefits the entire community,” he said.

The SACCO chairperson, Ms Hanifa Haruna, welcomed the support and pledged prudent management of the funds.

“We are committed to ensuring the responsible use of these funds to expand our businesses and improve our standards of living,” she said.

The beneficiaries were urged to remain united, disciplined and focused in utilising the funds, expressing confidence that the initiative would enhance livelihoods and contribute to sustainable community development.
