UPDF Hosts Japanese Professor For Agricultural Technology Demonstration

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Department of Production hosted Dr Jo Min Kim, a professor from the University of Tokyo, at the Kabamba Army Farm, where he carried out a field demonstration on advanced agricultural technology intended to improve crop resilience and increase yields.

Major General Sam Kiwanuka, the Chief Coordinator of the Department of Production, said the visit marked a significant step toward strengthening the UPDF’s capacity to produce food for its personnel. He noted that although agriculture remains central to the welfare of soldiers, it continues to grapple with challenges such as unpredictable weather patterns.

He explained that despite these setbacks, the department has helped stabilise the price of maize and other food items nationwide, which in turn has ensured consistent food security within the force.

During the demonstration, Dr Kim introduced Skepper Technology, an innovation developed to protect crops from drought and extreme heat.

“Skepper technology can save almost any types of plants during drought. It will allow the UPDF to safeguard yields, reduce water usage, and cut labour costs. With time, it has the potential to support UPDF operations by producing high volumes of food,” he said.

Maj JB Kawuki, Head of Production, said the force urgently needs to adopt modern innovations that can strengthen food production.

“We expect Dr Kim’s technology to improve our output and help us cope with drought conditions. This demonstration at Kabamba Farm will help us compare the performance of Skepper technology with our usual farming practices,” he said.

The demonstration was attended by staff officers from the Department of Production.
