Napak Youth Gain Practical Skills To Boost Livelihoods And Peace

Senior government officials, security leaders, and entrepreneurs have empowered youth leaders in Napak District, locally known as Karacuna, with vital skills in enterprise development, SACCO management, and income generation. The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to uplift young people and promote community-driven development in the Karamoja sub-region.

The training, held at Napak District Headquarters, was facilitated by the Microfinance Support Centre and cooperative leaders. It targeted 30 youth leaders and SACCO executives, equipping them to make informed business decisions and manage financial resources effectively.

Napak Resident District Commissioner Milton Odongo urged participants to champion peace and productivity within their communities. “I urge you to properly utilize the Shs 50 million grant provided by the government. It’s your entry into the money economy. You were prioritized—now go and spread the message of peace and pursue viable enterprises,” he said.

Brigadier General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Commander of the UPDF 3 Infantry Division, donated two bulls to aid oxen ploughing for SACCO-led agriculture. He encouraged the youth to become a model for others still vulnerable to negative influences. He also called on local leaders to strengthen sensitisation efforts and mobilise more groups to participate in government poverty alleviation programmes.

Napak District Chairperson Kodet Paul commended the Karacuna for abandoning cattle rustling, which he described as a longstanding menace in the region. He highlighted the importance of sustained cooperation and communication among youth to maintain stability.

Lydia Nambuya, Zonal Manager for the Microfinance Support Centre in Moroto, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to improving SACCO performance. She urged the youth to mobilise resources and establish dedicated office space to strengthen coordination.

The session was also attended by district technical staff and security officials, underscoring the broad support for youth-led progress in Napak.
