UPDF Salutes Seven Generals As They Prepare To Retire

Seven Generals of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have today been documented at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) headquarters in Mbuya, ahead of their retirement later this year.

The Chief of Joint Staff Major General Jack Bakasumba hailed the generals for their exceptional service, particularly in advancing capacity building and leadership within the force.

“These leaders have made remarkable contributions to national and regional peace, especially through international missions such as those in Somalia,” said Maj Gen Bakasumba.

The Generals preparing for retirement are Lieutenant General Peter Elwelu; Major Generals Hudson Mukasa, Francis Ben Okello, and George Igumba; and Brigadier Generals John Byuma, Dominic Twesigomwe, and Augustine Kamyuka Kyazze.

Maj Gen Bakasumba highlighted that retirement is a necessary phase of military progression, providing space for younger officers to rise while ensuring continuity within the institution. He urged the retirees to embrace their new chapter with purpose and remain steadfast in the values of the UPDF.

He added that the proposed amendments to the UPDF Act, 2005, would offer greater welfare support, including access to healthcare, disability compensation, and full burial honours.

“There is a whole new kind of life ahead, full of experience, just waiting to happen. Some call it retirement, I call it bliss,” quoted Maj GenBakasumba, citing American biochemist Betty Sullivan.

Brig Gen James Kinalwa, Joint Staff Human Resource Management advised the Generals to be mindful of their health and conduct, urging them to maintain the discipline that defined their military service as they reintegrate into civilian life.

The function was attended by MODVA officials, members of the Joint Services legal team, and representatives from the Veterans Legal Aid Clinics.
