UPDF Showcases Marksmanship in CDF Cup Shooting Range Tournament

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has conducted shooting range activities as part of the 17th edition of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Cup tournament in Masaka.

A total of 19 units took part, including the UPDF Air Force, Special Forces Command, infantry divisions (1st to 5th), Mountain Division, Artillery Division, Armoured Division, Mechanised Infantry, Joint Staff Headquarters, and Military Police. Other participants were the Marine Corps, Jinja Cantonment, MAGA X, Kaweweta, Kabamba, and the Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security (CDIS).

The exercises, which involved close-range shooting in standing, kneeling, and sitting positions at different distances, were designed to enhance soldiers’ marksmanship and operational effectiveness.

Lieutenant Colonel Moses Opel, who oversaw the shooting range, stressed the importance of the competition in sharpening combat skills. “The purpose of this event is primarily to improve the marksmanship and skills of our officers and soldiers,” he said.

He added that the tournament provides a vital opportunity for soldiers to refine their accuracy, speed, and mental focus in preparation for operational missions. “It provides our personnel with the opportunity to test their accuracy, speed, and mental focus to enhance their capabilities during operational missions,” Lt Col Opel explained.

Beyond combat readiness, the activities also promote core military values such as discipline, teamwork, and command and control. “We strengthen teamwork, promote healthy competition, and foster collaboration among the various units,” he noted.

He further highlighted that the exercises nurture professionalism, self-control, and calmness among participants, key attributes for effective service.

The event attracted UPDF senior and junior officers alongside competitors, reinforcing the tournament’s role in building both skill and camaraderie across the force.
