UPDF, Masaka Residents Partner in Tree Planting Drive to Combat Climate Change

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has promoted tree planting as part of the 17th edition of the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) Cup activities in Masaka.

The exercise, held in Kijjabwemi, brought together the UPDF and local residents in a joint effort to protect the environment.

Major General Deus Sande, Commander of the Armoured Division, officiated at the event and underscored the growing bond between soldiers and civilians. “This activity illustrates the positive relationship between civilians and the UPDF,” he said. “Previously, when civilians saw a soldier, they would often run away. Now, it is great to see this collaboration.”

Maj Gen Sande added that the initiative serves as a model for environmental awareness in the region. “We chose a specific area in Masaka to plant trees as an example so that people can recognize the importance of tree planting and the need to protect our environment,” he explained.

Brigadier General Richard Karemire, Joint Staff Education, Sports, and Culture, stressed that tree planting directly contributes to the fight against climate change. “We face the challenge of climate change, and as the UPDF, we remain committed to partnering with local residents to address this issue and protect our climate,” he said.

He further emphasized the need for community sensitisation on waste management. “We need to educate our population against littering, such as leaving behind plastic bags and bottles, to keep our environment clean,” Brig Gen Karemire noted.

Ahamada Washaki, the Resident City Commissioner of Masaka District, thanked President and Commander-in-Chief of the UPDF, H.E. Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, for initiating impactful programmes like the tree planting drive, while commending the UPDF for their discipline.

The event was attended by UPDF senior and junior officers, militants, government officials, and members of the local community.
