UPDF 3 Infantry Division Conducts 30km Route March In Karamoja

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division has conducted a 30-kilometre route march across parts of the Karamoja Sub-region as part of ongoing efforts to strengthen combat readiness and improve physical fitness among troops.

The exercise brought together personnel from the Division Headquarters and its affiliated brigades, including 403 Brigade in Napak, 405 Brigade in Kotido, 407 Brigade in Nakapiripirit, 2 Usalama in Moroto and other units operating within the wider area of responsibility.

Code-named Tuko Tayari, a Swahili phrase meaning “we are ready,” the battle-tested exercise was conducted across the brigades and later converged in Moroto District. Troops completed the final 30-kilometre stretch along the Moroto–Kitale–Kodonyo route before returning to the barracks.

Speaking on behalf of the Division Commander, Maj Gen Wilberforce Karate Sserunkuma, Deputy Division Commander Col Allan Kyangungu underscored the importance of the activity in building a professional and mission-ready force.

“I urge you to take advantage of this exercise to enhance your combat readiness, fitness and preparedness,” Col Kyangungu said.

He noted that the operational demands of the Division require continuous training to maintain combat posture and ensure effective command and control in line with strategic guidance.

Col Kyangungu added that beyond physical conditioning, the march reinforces discipline, teamwork and unity, qualities central to the ongoing Usalama Kwa Wote disarmament operations.

The Division Operations and Training Officer, Col Santurino Masereka Tumuranzye, said route marches remain a core component of the UPDF training doctrine, built to strengthen coordination, mental resilience and collective endurance.

He commended the troops for completing the exercise with high morale and determination.

Participants included brigade commanders, staff officers, the Division Administrative Officer and hundreds of soldiers drawn from the various units.
