The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 5 Infantry Division conducted a 30-kilometre route march across parts of the Lango and East Acholi sub-regions as part of ongoing efforts to maintain combat readiness.
The exercise was designed to evaluate troops’ physical fitness, stamina, teamwork, and overall preparedness for current and future military tasks. Personnel drawn from the Division Headquarters and affiliated brigades within the division’s area of operations participated in the march.
Addressing the troops at the Division Headquarters, the Deputy Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, Col Gai Fraser Mpadwa, emphasised the importance of continuous training in building a professional and mission-ready force.
“The route march is intended to test the physical fitness and battle readiness of our troops. It is during peacetime that we prepare for war and other military operations,” Col Mpadwa said.
He noted that regular training, combined with ideological orientation, discipline, integrity and professionalism, remains critical in preparing soldiers for diverse operational demands. According to Col Mpadwa, sustained preparation strengthens command and control, builds confidence and enhances operational effectiveness, particularly for infantry formations.
Similar 30-kilometre route marches were conducted simultaneously by UPDF troops in Lira City, Lamwo, Kitgum and Abim districts within their respective areas of operation, under the supervision of their commanders.
The exercise was attended by the 5 Infantry Division Intelligence Officer, Col Elvis Kaliba, the Division Training Officer, heads of departments, as well as other officers and enlisted personnel.
