Retiring UPDF Soldiers Urged To Uphold Discipline And Safeguard Community Peace

Major General Felix Busizoori, Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 4 Infantry Division, has urged retiring soldiers to uphold the values of discipline, patriotism, and vigilance as they re-enter civilian life.

Addressing Batch 15 militants during a documentation and sensitisation exercise at the division headquarters in Gulu, Maj Gen Busizoori commended the veterans for their steadfast service in restoring peace to Northern Uganda. “I want to thank you for standing firm during the most difficult times in our country’s history,” he said.

“Your contribution to pacifying Northern Uganda will never be forgotten. You served with honour and did not let down the Commander-in-Chief or the people of Uganda when we needed you most.”

He reassured the retirees that their departure from active service does not sever their ties to the UPDF, describing the process as a transition to the reserve force. “You are not leaving the force completely. You are transitioning into the reserve. That means you can be called upon any time to support missions, including international peacekeeping efforts where the UPDF is actively engaged,” he explained.

Urging the retirees to remain model citizens, Maj Gen Busizoori called for discipline, civic responsibility, and vigilance against insecurity in their communities. He also cautioned them against alcohol misuse, warning of the health risks, and the potential impact on their pension savings.

He encouraged those in political participation but warned against divisive politics, emphasising the importance of preserving Northern Uganda’s hard-earned peace. “Lead by example,” he encouraged.

On financial matters, he advised prudence. “Do not invest blindly. Consult, research, and make informed decisions. Join veteran SACCOs in your areas for access to financial support and training.”

Present were: Brig Gen Jackson Kayanja, Deputy Commander of 4 Division; Col Samson Nabeeta, Division Administration Officer; Col Muwa Mawa, Reserve Force Commander for the Acholi Sub-region; and representatives from the Joint Staff Human Resource department and the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA).
