Maj Gen Nabasa Calls For Continued Security Focus In Karamoja Region

Major General Don Nabasa, Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division, has urged military leaders to prioritise security and peacebuilding in Karamoja as essential drivers of socio-economic development.

“I urge you, commanders, to maintain security and create peace as an enabler towards achieving socio-economic transformation,” Maj Gen Nabasa stated.

His call came during the handover ceremony at Nakaperimoru Army Barracks in Kotido District on Sunday, 15 December, marking the change of command of the 405 Brigade, responsible for security in North Karamoja. Lieutenant Colonel Gaston Mugarura, formerly the commanding officer of the 45 Infantry Battalion in Kaabong, took over from Colonel David Byaruhanga, who has been reassigned to the 501 Infantry Brigade in Palaro, under the 4 Infantry Division.

 

Maj Gen Nabasa urged commanders to foster unity and go the extra mile in engaging with both profiled and hardened criminals. He encouraged efforts to persuade offenders to voluntarily surrender and take advantage of the amnesty offered as part of the ongoing disarmament campaign.

 

He also advised commanders to collaborate with district security committees to ensure effective deployments in preparation for the festive season and New Year’s Eve in Eastern Uganda, with the aim of bolstering security during this period.

Brigadier General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Deputy Division Commander, highlighted the need for adaptation and mentoring within the military to ensure future leadership continuity.

Lieutenant Colonel Mugarura, the new 405 Brigade Commander, expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to lead the brigade and reassured the leadership of his commitment to meeting their expectations. He also acknowledged the support of local leaders and security agencies.

 

Hon Paul Lotee Komol, LC V Chairperson of Kotido District, praised the collaborative efforts of joint security forces and the local community. He noted the positive shift towards improved security and peace in the region, a significant departure from previous challenges.

 

The ceremony was attended by senior officials, including SSP Soma Nelson, D/RPC for Kidepo Region, Brigade Commanders, Commanding Officers, and representatives from ASTU and ISO.
