3 Infantry Division Commander Commends Security Stakeholders For Sustaining Peace In Karamoja

The Commander of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division, Major General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, has commended security stakeholders in North Karamoja for their collective efforts in maintaining peace and stability across the sub-region.

Speaking during a regional security meeting in Karenga District, Maj Gen Sserunkuma said the security situation in Karamoja had significantly improved.

“The peace dividends are already evident. Today, we are witnessing the establishment of Kidepo International Airport in Karenga District, new factories across Karamoja, and tremendous growth in tourism. This is all because of our collective effort, discipline, and dedication to serving our government. We must protect and consolidate these gains,” he said.

He called for enhanced coordination and cooperation among all security agencies, to prevent criminal activities.

“I implore you to be proactive rather than reactive. You must detect insecurity before it happens as a deterrent measure. We cannot afford to lose the peace we have achieved. Stay ahead of the criminals,” he urged.

Maj Gen Sserunkuma also reminded commanders of the ongoing socio-economic transformation taking place in the region and directed them to ensure that government development programmes are protected from any form of insecurity.

He observed that the improved security environment has contributed to the growing profile of Kidepo Valley National Park, which continues to attract international recognition and generate revenue through tourism.

Maj Gen Sserunkuma stressed the importance of strengthening relations with local leaders and communities through regular engagements, noting that such partnerships are critical in understanding security dynamics and safeguarding the peace gains achieved under Operation Usalama Kwa Wote.

The meeting was attended by the Commander of 405 Brigade, Col Ruziro Nuwagaba; Karenga District Police Commander, AIP Manana Martin; Kidepo ASTU Commander, SP Muyonjo Nicholas; Commanding Officer 1 Battalion; Commanding Officer 47 Battalion, Maj Apollo O Okema; the Zonal ASTU Commander for Karenga; and other officers from the UPDF, Uganda Police Force.
