The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 3 Infantry Division has passed out 48 officers who completed the Platoon Commanders Course (PCC) Intake 17/26 at a ceremony held at the division headquarters in Moroto.
Speaking at the pass-out ceremony, the 3 Infantry Division Commander, Major General Wilberforce Serunkuma, commended the strategic leadership of the UPDF and the Commandant of the School of Artillery and Air Defence for decentralising the training to the division level.
He described training as the backbone of a modern and professional force, reminding the graduates that platoon commanders remain a vital link between senior command and soldiers on the ground.
The Division Commander urged the newly commissioned platoon commanders to uphold discipline, professionalism and technical competence, noting that their conduct directly influences troop morale and operational success.
“This is not merely the end of a course, but rather the beginning of a greater responsibility and service to the nation. I have no doubt that you will go and serve with grace and honour,” he said.
He further cautioned the officers on the importance of maintaining good relations with civilians, describing wananchi as the “backbone and soul” of the UPDF.
The Deputy Division Commander, Brig Gen Allan Kyangungu, applauded the resilience and commitment demonstrated by the officers throughout the demanding course.
The Division Training and Operations Officer (DOTO), Col Santorino M. Tumuryanze, said the course covered key modules including administration, tactics, small arms handling, counter-insurgency operations and peace support operations, alongside intensive field exercises.
Different officers were recognised for outstanding performance. Lt Joseph Mukasa was awarded best in leadership, Lt Elle Muhwezi emerged best overall, Lt Gerald Wandukwa was recognised as best in field exercises, while Lt Gerald Byemaro was named best in class.
The ceremony was attended by the Deputy Division Commander, brigade and unit commanders, senior commanders from sister security agencies including ASTU, Uganda Police Force and Uganda Prisons Service, as well as senior and junior officers of the division.
