UPDF Troops In Somalia Mark World Environment Day

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops in Somalia, operating under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and the United Nations Guard Unit (UNGU), participated in the global celebration of World Environment Day in Mogadishu, Somalia, today.

This year’s theme was “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience,” and the slogan “Our Land, Our Future” highlighting the journey towards a greener future.
The troops marked the occasion by cleaning the ocean shores and the beach at the base camp, followed by tree planting.

The Sector One Commander, Brig Gen Anthony Lukwago Mbuusi, emphasised the importance of tree planting, proper waste disposal, and environmental protection and conservation. He urged the troops to engage in these activities as part of their mission.

Abdirahim Barre Mohamed, Director and representative of Somalia’s Minister of Environment and Climate Change, reaffirmed the Federal Government of Somalia’s (FGS) commitment to environmental protection through afforestation, good agricultural practices, and engaging young people in conservation efforts. He called on everyone to take action, stressing that every effort counts and collective action can make a significant difference.

The UN/ATMIS donated over 5,000 tree seedlings of various species, including fruit trees, to the minister for planting.

The celebration was attended by key stakeholders from the UN in Somalia, the AU, and the FGS.
