Somalia Army Chief Praises UPDF Troops For Commitment In Mogadishu Visit

The Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) of the Somalia National Army (SNA), Major General Yusuf Rageh Odowaa, has praised the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) for their unwavering commitment and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism during a visit to the Ugandan Contingent headquarters under the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia on 28 April 2025.

Major General Odowaa commended the UPDF troops for their selfless service to peace and security in Somalia, particularly in combatting Al-Shabaab, stating that their “sacrifice and bravery” had significantly contributed to the progress being achieved.

Pledging continued cooperation, he emphasised the importance of joint operations to fully defeat Al-Shabaab. “We are determined to liberate and pacify all areas still under terrorist control. Our goal is to restore lasting peace and enable the free movement of people and goods throughout Somalia,” he said.

Uganda’s Defence Advisor in Somalia, Brigadier General Francis Chemo, thanked the Federal Government of Somalia for entrusting Uganda with the responsibility of contributing to peacekeeping efforts for the past 18 years.

He also highlighted the urgent need to recruit and train additional troops, and to equip forces with modern weaponry capable of effectively countering insurgent threats.

Sector One Commander, Brigadier General Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, reaffirmed the UPDF’s dedication to the mission in Somalia, stating, “We remain committed to supporting the SNA and the Federal Government of Somalia. The UPDF will continue to execute its mandate with diligence and professionalism.”

He further underscored the crucial role of local communities in the fight against terrorism, particularly through information sharing and counter-insurgency support.

The visit was also attended by Deputy Sector One Commander Colonel Christopher Tumwine, Contingent Administration Officer Colonel John Mark Ssemanda, Contingent Operations Officer Colonel David Watasa, and other senior staff officers.
