UPDF 1 Infantry Division Welcomes New Acting Commander

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) 1 Infantry Division has undergone a leadership change, with Major General Stephen Mugerwa handing over command to Brigadier General Fred Mwesigye, who assumes the role in an acting capacity.

The handover ceremony, held at the Division Headquarters in Kakiri, was officiated by Deputy Commander Land Force, Major General Francis Takirwa.

Maj Gen Takirwa stressed the value of smooth transitions in both military and civilian institutions, noting that the formal exchange of instruments of office ensures continuity and offers a clear starting point for new leaders. “Those who take over must also prepare to hand over,” Maj Gen Takirwa said. “It is a healthy culture of leadership that should always be embraced in good faith.”

He also urged senior officers to promote financial discipline among their troops, encouraging them to save through Wazalendo SACCO. He reminded soldiers that retirement is inevitable and savings guarantee stability after active service.

In his farewell remarks, outgoing commander Maj Gen Mugerwa thanked the UPDF leadership for its guidance and expressed appreciation to the officers and men of the Division for their teamwork during his tenure.

Brig Gen Mwesigye thanked the UPDF leadership for entrusting him with the responsibility and pledged to serve with dedication.

The event was attended by Brig Gen Fred Ssegamwenge, Coordinator of Operation Wealth Creation and Wakiso District Reserve Commander; Col Emmanuel Ewama, 1 Division Administrative Officer; brigade and battalion commanders; senior and junior UPDF officers; and ASP Alex Kyankaga, Officer in Charge of Kakiri Police Station.
