Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) troops serving under the African Union Support and Stabilization Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) and the United Nations Guard Unit 12 commemorated World Environment Day with a tree-planting exercise and a beach cleanup along the Indian Ocean coastline.
This year’s theme, “Inspired by Nature, For Climate, For our Future,” guided activities aimed at conserving the environment, mitigating climate change effects, and protecting aquatic life through proper waste management and environmental stewardship.
The Uganda Contingent Deputy Commander, Colonel Francis Aragamoi Obita, emphasised the importance of a healthy environment for military operations and personnel well-being. He urged troops to prioritize conservation wherever they operate.
“We must preserve the environment wherever we go. When we first came here in 2007, there were very few trees, but today the area is green. We need to continue planting more trees and protect aquatic life by ensuring that our beaches remain clean,” Col. Aragamoi said.
He said that environmental conservation directly affects the economic well-being of communities, especially in Somalia’s predominantly desert climate.
The Contingent Administration Officer, Col Hamza Kasajja, said observing World Environment Day aligns with AUSSOM’s mandate to support community well-being and promote sustainable development. He underscored the need to mitigate climate change, improve environmental management, and safeguard aquatic ecosystems for future generations.
Mr. Richard Oyo, the environmental officer from the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS), commended the UPDF for their commitment to conservation alongside their peacekeeping duties.
He highlighted Somalia’s growing environmental challenges, including droughts and floods, and called for effective waste management to reduce pollution and curb global warming.
The event demonstrated the commitment of UPDF troops, AUSSOM, UNGU 12, and partners to environmental protection, climate action, and community engagement as part of broader efforts to build a sustainable and resilient Somalia.
