5 Division Deputy Commander Urges Youth To Avoid Crime This Festive Season

The Deputy Division Commander of the 5 Infantry Division of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), Col David Opeero, has strongly warned young people against engaging in criminal activities during the festive season.

Speaking at a regional security committee meeting at Achol Pii Barracks, Col Opeero specifically cautioned the youth, particularly from the Agur group, against crimes such as robbery, rape, pickpocketing, and attacks on travellers. He made it clear that those caught committing illegal acts would face severe legal consequences. “Christmas is a period we approach with joy, but it also comes with challenges. Let us all be responsible and avoid excessive drinking, which leads to road accidents and unnecessary fights,” Col Opeero urged.

He also advised communities to secure their cattle in designated or protected kraals to prevent theft by cattle rustlers.

The Regional Police Commander, SSP Okae Ben Geoffrey, highlighted the importance of collective responsibility in maintaining security throughout the festive season. He also reminded the public that anyone planning to display fireworks must seek clearance from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and ensure the display is conducted by trained professionals.

Lt Hakim Viga, Acting Regional Internal Security Officer for Acholi, cautioned citizens to be vigilant in their business dealings, noting an increase in the circulation of counterfeit money, particularly targeting farmers, mobile money agents, and local businesses. “There are people claiming to be businessmen moving around with fake money. People must be careful,” Lt Viga warned.

The meeting, attended by members of the regional security committee, underscored the collective efforts of the authorities to ensure a peaceful and safe festive season in the region.
