The Entebbe Resident District Commissioner, Ms Jackline Kokunda has presided over the burning of illegal nets and immature fish captured during Fisheries Protection Unit operations in the general areas of Entebbe and Wakiso District.
Kokunda applauded the efforts by the President and thanked Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces, particularly the Fisheries Protection Unit and the partners who are conducting enforcement operations.
She said that the three tonnes of immature Nile perch fish that were destroyed could bring the country a lot of revenue if they were left to achieve their full maturity.
The RDC advised the fishing communities to either use the right gear or involve themselves int other alternatives other than illegal fishing and using the wrong gear.
She appealed to the general public to follow the accepted standards of fishing to avoid conflicting with Standard Operating Procedures and the law.
