UPDF Troops Urged to Uphold Accountability and Discipline for a Stronger Force

The Commander Jinja Cantonment, Brig Gen Emmanuel Kanyesigye, has called on Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers to embrace discipline, honesty, hard work, and accountability to enhance the effectiveness of the force.

He made the remarks while officiating at the graduation ceremony of three military courses – the Basic Stores Management Course, Drivers Refresher Course, and Truck Drivers Course – held at the School of Supplies and Transport (SOST), Gadaffi Barracks in Jinja City. “Logistics is a science and the engine of UPDF operations. You must uphold our core principles of discipline, honesty, hard work, and accountability to ensure success and professionalism within the force,” Brig Gen Kanyesigye said.

He urged them to apply the skills acquired during the four-month training to make a meaningful impact. He commended the UPDF leadership for prioritising training as a key driver of professional growth in the army.

Brig Gen Kanyesigye also issued a caution against reckless lifestyles, particularly alcoholism and having multiple sexual partners, warning that such behaviour could ruin their futures. “You are young, brilliant, and have a bright future. HIV/AIDS is real and remains a serious threat. Avoid living recklessly, it could cost you your life,” he advised.

Col JB Katongole, the Commandant of SOST, said the Basic Stores Management Course had 123 participants, the Drivers Refresher Course had 61, and the Truck Drivers Course had 39. He highlighted recent improvements at the school, including the renovation of infrastructure and the establishment of a computer laboratory.

Outstanding students from each course were recognised for their exemplary performance:

In the Basic Stores Management Course, Cpl Edema Justine was named most disciplined, Pte Cidowinyi Hillary was best overall, and Pte Musimenta Barbra was best in practicals.

In the Drivers Refresher Course, Cpl Mwebingwa Joseph was most disciplined, Pte Bakashaba Paul was best overall, and Pte Fataki Amin was best in practicals.

In the Truck Drivers Course, Cpl Okumu Julius was most disciplined, Cpl Kyalimpa Zubairi was named best overall, and Pte Sekanjako Ronald was best in practicals.

The ceremony was attended by senior officers including Col Chris Kyanku, Commandant of the College of Logistics and Engineering; Col Godfrey Abigaba, Commander of the Defence General Depot; Col Amos Rutaremwa; alongside other senior and junior officers from Gadaffi Barracks.
