UPDF Strengthens Training Capacity with Completion of Training of Trainers Course

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has concluded the fourth intake of the Trainer of Trainers (TOT) course at the Legal Training Centre in Jinja, with 24 participants, including three women, completing the month-long programme.

The course was officially closed by the Assistant Chief of Defence Intelligence and Security, Brig Gen Paddy Ankunda.

In his remarks, Brig Gen Ankunda applauded the trainees for their dedication and urged them to apply the skills acquired to support the institution that invested in their professional growth.

“This milestone is not only significant for you as participants but also for the institution as we continue our journey to transform and professionalise the UPDF,” he said.

“Training is the backbone of any institution that aspires to grow, transform and remain relevant in a dynamic environment.”

He added that training forms the foundation of operational readiness, strategic adaptability and institutional credibility. By equipping trainers to instruct others, he said, the UPDF was creating a “multiplier effect” that would benefit every level of command and service.

Col Susan Mwanga, the Commandant of the Legal Training Centre, explained that most of the participants were drawn from training schools and the legal department, reflecting the course’s focus on building capacity in the law of armed conflict, incidental laws and instructional skills.

She said the training was guided by international humanitarian law and the 2006 directive requiring UPDF leadership to ensure that all forces are trained in IHL. The curriculum combined modules on the law of armed conflict with practical sessions on training, communication and instructional methods.

The best performers included; Pte Tanga Amanya Dennis as the overall best student, 2Lt Susan Ashaba (discipline), while Lt Ronald Kabagambe served as the course senior.
