Thirty-two Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) soldiers completed an eight-week geospatial map-making course at the Headquarters Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability (HQ-URDC) in Gaddafi Barracks, Jinja City.
The training, conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Lands, saw expert instructors equip troops with vital mapping skills.
Brig Gen Earnest Nuwagaba, Commander of HQ-URDC, underscored the programme’s significance during the pass-out ceremony, stating it “has contributed to the academic growth of the trainees, aligning with the professionalization of the UPDF as pledged by His Excellency the President and Commander-in-Chief.”
Reaffirming the army’s dedication to expertise and discipline, he urged graduates to apply their skills “for the benefit of the institution.” Brig Gen Nuwagaba also thanked the Ministry of Lands for collaborating with the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA) to deliver the training.
Mr Asizua Fax Agadribo, Assistant Commissioner for Mapping at the Ministry of Lands, explained that the course blended theory and practice to ensure thorough comprehension. He added that the soldiers would now aid in resolving administrative boundaries and interpreting topographic data.
Outstanding performers were honoured, including Pte Abdul Hassan Ouma (Best in Class), Pte Agaba Derrick (Best in the Field), Pte Anyango Fiona (Best Female Trainee), Pte Amutuhairwe Franklin (Most Disciplined), and Pte Ashley Joseph Bill (Best Overall).
The ceremony was attended by representatives from the Global Peace Initiative, Jinja Cantonment officers, and other dignitaries.
