A total of 80 Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces officers and men drawn from various formations within the Magamaga cantonment yesterday completed a one-week training course in Land Law and Estate Management at Magamaga Barracks, Mayuge district.
The training was conducted by the UPDF Legal Training Centre based in Jinja with the aim of building capacity and enhancing knowledge of land law and estate management among the troops.
Col James Ssajabi, who represented the cantonment commander, during the closing ceremony, emphasised the importance of land as a vital asset saying, “Land is a vital asset but has been a major cause of insecurity. Most family disputes emanate from land. The army leadership therefore thought it wise to enhance troops with knowledge on how to acquire land.”
He urged the participants to apply the knowledge they had acquired to avoid becoming victims of land disputes.
Lt Col Suzan Mwanga, the Commandant of the Legal Training Centre, highlighted the significance of the training, noting that it was the first outreach of its kind and would be extended to all UPDF units and formations.
“This was the first outreach and will roll on to all UPDF units and formations to equip troops with relevant knowledge on Land Law and Estate Management. This will reduce the burden on land officers who were overstretched,” she explained.
She also expressed gratitude to the army leadership for granting permission to conduct the course.
