The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces has underscored the importance of integrating gender considerations in modern peace support operations.
Speaking at the the closure of a ten-day training on Gender in Peace Support Operations at Headquarter Uganda Rapid Deployment Capability, Jinja, the Chief of Staff, Hq URDC, Brigadier General Flavia Byekwaso, highlighted that integrating gender perspectives strengthens operational effectiveness, mission success, and the protection of vulnerable communities.
She conveyed appreciation to the British Peace Support Team Africa and UPDF co-facilitators for their support in delivering the training.
Brig Gen Byekwaso noted that participants have acquired practical skills, demonstrated through their syndicate presentations, on identifying, preventing, and reporting sexual exploitation and abuse, integrating gender into operational planning, and understanding international and domestic legal frameworks.
“You are now the nucleus on which we count to advise commanders on gender matters, lead gender efforts in operational planning, and mentor others,” she said.
Ms. Monica Musyoni, lead facilitator from the British Peace Support Team Africa, said the training has deepened participants’ understanding of gender and its importance across all levels of peace operations.
She added that their successful completion of the course reflects their dedication and the proficiency gained in addressing gender issues in both domestic and future peacekeeping contexts.
