Over 1,000 UPDF Officers Graduate After Artillery and Air Defence Training

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has passed out 1,020 personnel from the School of Artillery and Air Defence (SAAD) after completing intensive training in Morulinga Village, Olilim Sub-county, Katakwi District.

Maj Gen Dan Kakono, Commander Artillery Division, who represented the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, praised the graduates for their endurance, discipline, and commitment. “Building an army involves training. The UPDF of the future depends on how you, the young officers, take your training seriously,” he said.

Maj Gen Kakono urged the officers to uphold professionalism, responsibility, and patriotism, reminding them that the country’s investment in their training was a sign of trust placed in them to defend Uganda. “Countries without the capacity to defend themselves are easily swallowed up. We live in a practical world of self-defence,” he added, while also appreciating the local community for supporting the school.

Brig Gen Ali Kiiza Kasauli, Director Anti-Aircraft – Land Force, cautioned the graduates to remain disciplined in and out of service. He particularly warned against misuse of social media, stressing that irresponsible conduct online could jeopardise careers and security.

SAAD Commandant, Lt Col Abenul, noted that 428 officers specialised in artillery and 592 in air defence. “It has not been an easy task, but your discipline and endurance have brought you this far. Continue upholding the values of this school and the UPDF. Live a healthy lifestyle and maintain physical fitness,” he said.

Sgt (Rtd) Elada John, LC1 Chairperson of Morulinga Village, lauded the school’s contribution to local development, including the establishment of the first secondary school in the area by UPDF personnel.

The ceremony was attended by senior and junior UPDF officers, police and prison commanders, local government leaders, and residents.
