The Force Commander of the African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia, Lt Gen Sam Kavuma, emphasized the importance of maintaining discipline and strong relations with local communities as key factors in the success of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces mission in Somalia.
His remarks were made during the 44th Tarehe Sita anniversary celebrations in Mogadishu on 6th February 2025.
Lt Gen Kavuma highlighted the theme of this year’s Tarehe Sita celebrations, “Celebrating Pan African Solidarity and the People’s Sacrifice in the Struggle for Freedom and Democracy for Socio-Economic Transformation.”
He explained that this theme reflects the core reasons for the UPDF’s involvement in Somalia as part of the broader Pan-African cause.
“Tarehe Sita represents the beginning of the protracted people’s struggle, and it is the support of the people that has allowed the UPDF to succeed wherever we operate,” said Lt Gen Kavuma.
He urged UPDF personnel to focus on winning the support of local communities, stressing that no mission could succeed without the backing of the people.
He continued, “We are here in Somalia to help our brothers and sisters because, at one point in history, we too were helped by others.”
The Sector One Commander Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga underscored the vital role of the UPDF in maintaining regional peace and stability, particularly in Somalia.
He reflected on the role of ideology in binding the National Resistance Army (NRA) during the liberation struggle, noting that Barazas and community engagements were instrumental in resolving issues and fostering discipline, morale, and Pan-Africanism among the fighters.
To mark Tarehe Sita, Sector One engaged in community service activities, including free medical camps, tree planting, and cleaning initiatives around the Marine Market and surrounding areas.
The anniversary event was attended by senior officers and personnel from Sector One contingent headquarters.
