ICT Minister Launches 45th Tarehe Sita Celebrations in Kanungu

The Minister for Information Communication Technology (ICT) and National Guidance, Hon Dr Chris Baryomunsi, has today launched the 45th Tarehe Sita celebrations at Kihihi Grounds in Kanungu district, Kigezi sub-region.

The event honors the historical support the area provided to the liberation struggle, particularly through the Front for National Salvation (FRONASA).

The celebrations are themed “Defending the Gains of the Revolution and Honouring the Sacrifices of Freedom Fighters: A Call for National Unity, Peace, and Socio-Economic Transformation”.

Hon Dr Baryomunsi commended the President of the Republic of Uganda H.E Gen (Rtd) Yoweri Kaguta Museveni for his leadership in maintaining national peace and unity, saying the country is now exporting peace to other parts of the world.

He urged the youth to engage in positive politics and reminded the people of Kigezi Sub-region that their sacrifices were not in vain.

The minister also praised UPDF for their community engagement support in Kanungu and thanked them for their discipline, which has made the country safe from border to border.

Brig Gen Tweheyo, representing the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, thanked the civilian population for their support during the liberation struggle and urged them to guard the peace jealously.

“Thank you for standing firm with the earlier struggles like the University Students African Revolutionary Front that later transformed into NRA to liberate Uganda,” he noted.

He also encouraged Ugandans to exploit the existing peace by working hard to improve their economic situation.

He warned against overdrinking amongst the youth, most especially from those around the border areas.

Lt Col Sam Ntungura, head of Civil Military relations in Kanungu District, speaking on behalf of the Joint Staff Political Commissar Maj Gen Henry Masiko, said Tarehe Sita serves as a tribute to the efforts of NRA/UPDF founding members in advancing a people-led revolution that aims at achieving freedom, democratic principles and social economic transformation.

He added that it’s a moment to honor and acknowledge the contributions of our fore fathers towards the 6th February 1981 events, a turning point in the peoples’ struggle for peace and stability.

The function was also attended by Religious, Cultural leaders, locals of the area and UPDF General Officers and senior officers.
