Mountain Division And JSHQ Triumph At 16th CDF Cup With Stellar Performances

The 16th Edition of the CDF Cup reached an exhilarating conclusion at St. Leo’s College in Fort Portal, Kabarole district, as the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) Mountain Division and Joint Staff Headquarters (JSHQ) emerged victorious in football and netball, respectively.

 

In a nail-biting football final, the Mountain Division secured the title with a dramatic 3-1 penalty victory over JSHQ. Meanwhile, in netball, JSHQ showcased their dominance with a resounding 49-34 win against the UPDF Air Force.

 

Lt Gen Charles Awany Otema, Commander Reserve Force, represented the Chief of Defence Forces and reiterated the importance of physical fitness and unit cohesion. “I re-echo the CDF’s message that if you want to reach where we are in age, you must keep healthy through sports because it’s part of discipline,” stated Lt Gen Otema.

 

He urged the tournament organisers to recognise players who showcased exceptional skills and potential, advocating for opportunities that could elevate them to national recognition.

 

Col Paul Muwonge, Deputy Commander of the Mountain Division, expressed gratitude to UPDF leadership for their steadfast support of the tournament hosted by the Mountain Division. He encouraged participating teams to embody the spirit of unity, commitment, and camaraderie that characterised the event and to continue strengthening these connections beyond the tournament.

 

Col Deus Taremwa, Director of Education, Sports and Culture – Land Force, on behalf of the Joint Staff Formal Education, Sports and Culture, highlighted the tournament’s purpose to promote harmony and uplift the morale of soldiers.

 

Col Joseph Freddy Onata, Chief Executive Officer of Wazalendo SACCO, reaffirmed Wazalendo’s commitment to sponsor the tournament, saying: “We take pride in promoting the health of our people but most importantly in the development of talents.”

 

The tournament also acknowledged standout players, with Pte Chandia Alex and Pte Wanyenze Bila earning the title of Most Valuable Players. Other awards included:

 

Netball:

  • Best Shooter: Pte Kajumba Agnes
  • Best Defender: Pte Akuklu Nancy

 

Football:

  • Top Scorer: Pte Ayijuka Edgar

 

The Armoured Division received recognition as the most disciplined team.

 

The vibrant event was attended by Generals, senior and junior officers, Woman MP Hon Linda Irene, and various city leaders, among others.
