Acholi, Madi Communities Urged To Resolve Land Disputes Through Dialogue

The Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) 4 Infantry Division Commander Major General Felix Busizoori, has called on the Acholi and Madi communities to resolve their ongoing land disputes through dialogue rather than violence.

Maj Gen Busizoori appealed during a peace dialogue meeting held at Itirikwa Sub-county in Adjumani District, expressing concern over continued land wrangles that he said have led to loss of lives, displacement of families, and destruction of property. He emphasised that peaceful engagement remains the most sustainable approach to resolving the disputes.

“Fight with the hoe in the garden, not with weapons,” he said, encouraging residents to focus on improving their livelihoods instead of engaging in conflict.

He condemned tribalism, describing it as a backward practice that undermines development, and urged communities to channel their energy into productive activities, particularly agriculture.

Maj Gen Busizoori cautioned local leaders against inciting violence or exploiting land disputes for personal gain, noting that some individuals were falsely claiming ownership of land and misleading communities, thereby fueling tensions. He warned that decisive action would be taken against anyone found promoting conflict or taking advantage of civilians.

Calling for unity, he urged residents to embrace peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.

He encouraged local leaders to prioritise development initiatives, including the establishment of health facilities and schools, as well as the provision of improved agricultural inputs such as high-quality maize and cocoa seeds to boost productivity and livelihoods.

The meeting was attended by several leaders, including Adjumani District Woman Member of Parliament Jesca Ababiku, MP James Mamawi (Adjumani East), Col Nathan Bainomugisha of the 501 Brigade, regional police commanders from West Nile and Aswa regions, and other stakeholders.
