The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) have issued a stern warning to cattle rustlers after two armed suspects were killed in a series of security operations in Northern Uganda.
Col David Opeero, Deputy Commander of the 5 Infantry Division, said troops from the 75 Battalion acted on a tip-off on Tuesday afternoon and pursued suspected livestock thieves believed to have crossed into Uganda from South Sudan.
The operation in Pii Pee Village led to the death of one suspect, identified as Oryema Payas from Obutuce Village in Namukora North Sub-County, Kitgum District.
In a separate operation, UPDF soldiers from the 81 Battalion neutralised another armed suspect in Lira Kato Sub-County, Agago District, as part of a sustained crackdown on cattle theft.
Col Patrick Opira, Commander of the 505 Brigade, praised local residents for their vigilance and collaboration with the UPDF, noting that their support has been key in recovering stolen livestock. “Community cooperation has made a significant impact on our operations,” he said.
Since the beginning of 2025, the UPDF has recovered numerous stolen animals and firearms from raiders, returning all livestock to their rightful owners.
