UPDF’S United Nations Guard Unit Launches Blood Donation Drive

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), serving under the United Nations Guard Unit Eleven (UNGU XI) in Somalia, on Friday launched a blood donation campaign aimed at boosting blood supplies in the mission area.

The campaign was officially launched at the United Nations Support Office in Somalia (UNSOS) Level 1 Hospital in Mogadishu.

Speaking at the event, the UNGU XI Contingent Commander, Lt Col Peter Ruyogozya Barigye, described the campaign as a timely humanitarian response to a request from the AUSSOM Level Two Field Hospital, which called on the unit to support efforts to improve the availability of blood for medical emergencies.

“Your blood can save three lives. That’s three families who’ll get to see their loved ones again. There is nothing more fulfilling than knowing someone is alive because of you,” said Lt Col Barigye.

Maj Jacob Gowan Kaburika commended the personnel for their dedication and willingness to donate, saying that it was a patriotic display of humanity and compassion, and urged them to maintain the spirit of supporting one another, emphasizing that blood is the fountain of life, “what one gives today, someone else may give in return tomorrow.”

Capt Dr Andrew Namaulula, the Contingent Medical Officer, emphasized the broader impact of the initiative, stating that as peacekeepers, their role goes beyond providing security: “Let’s rally together and show what it means to wear the uniform. Let’s give the gift of life and make a difference.”

This latest initiative is part of the UPDF’s corporate social responsibility program, which seeks to strengthen ties with the local community and promote peace and goodwill.
