UPDF Troops Urged To Uphold Discipline In Mission Areas

Major General Francis Takirwa, Deputy Commander of Land Force, has urged Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) troops to uphold discipline, patience, and dedication as they prepare for deployment under the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) and the Uganda Military Training and Mentoring Team (UMTMT).

Maj Gen Takirwa made the appeal during the flag-off ceremony for Battlegroup XLII (42) and UMTMT IX (9) at the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre (IPSO – TC) in Singo today.

He highlighted the importance of ethical conduct and cooperation with local communities in achieving mission success. Stressing humility, respect, and cultural sensitivity, Maj Gen Takirwa reminded the troops, “You are not citizens of that country,” urging them to be problem-solvers in the areas they are deployed.

“Discipline, patience, and commitment will see you through this mission,” he added.

Brigadier General John Patrick Otongo, Commandant of the IPSO-TC, expressed confidence in the troops’ preparedness, stating, “It is my conviction that the objectives of the training have been achieved, and we therefore expect successful operations in the mission area.”

Brig Gen Otongo reassured the troops of their preparedness, saying, “You have all that it takes to perform your duties in the mission area. As the International Peace Support Operations Training Centre, we wish you success in your mission and look forward to welcoming you back.”

He pointed out that the training was primarily conducted by UPDF instructors with support and mentorship from international partners, including the Global Peace Operation Initiative.

The ceremony was attended by Battlegroup commanders, senior and junior officers, as well as other military personnel.
