This recognition was made during a medal and certificate award ceremony on Thursday, 20th February 2025, to honour soldiers of Battle Group XL who completed a one-year tour of duty with AUSSOM in Somalia.
Lt Gen Kavuma commended the outgoing battle group for successfully implementing AUSSOM’s mandate, enhancing civilian safety in Somalia, and fostering development through the provision of peace and security.
“I want to congratulate Battle Group 40 under the able leadership of Col. Topher Magino for the good job done during the one year you’ve been here,” said Lt Gen Kavuma.
“You joined other contingents and battle groups in the effort to search for peace for the state and people of Somalia,” he added.
He emphasised the significance of the medals awarded, stating that they represent more than just metal worn on the chest; rather, they are symbols of recognition for hard work, dedication, and effort.
“I commend Battle Group XL for their remarkable achievements. Thank you for your dedication to supporting the Federal Government of Somalia and for upholding the principles of peace and security,” said Col Tumwine.
Present at the medal award ceremony were AUSSOM Uganda Contingent Commander, Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, Contingent Administrative Officer, Col John Mark Ssemanda, and the incoming commander of Battle Group XLIII, Col Robert Koch.
