UPDF Troops Honoured for Peacekeeping Efforts in Somalia

The African Union Support and Stabilisation Mission in Somalia (AUSSOM) has saluted troops of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces for their dedication and contribution to the restoration of peace and stability in Somalia.

This recognition was made during a medal and certificate award ceremony on Thursday, 20th February 2025, to honour soldiers of Battle Group XL who completed a one-year tour of duty with AUSSOM in Somalia.

The ceremony, held at the AUSSOM Uganda contingent headquarters in Mogadishu, was presided over by AUSSOM Force Commander, Lt Gen Sam Kavuma.

Lt Gen Kavuma commended the outgoing battle group for successfully implementing AUSSOM’s mandate, enhancing civilian safety in Somalia, and fostering development through the provision of peace and security.

“I want to congratulate Battle Group 40 under the able leadership of Col. Topher Magino for the good job done during the one year you’ve been here,” said Lt Gen Kavuma.

“You joined other contingents and battle groups in the effort to search for peace for the state and people of Somalia,” he added.

He emphasised the significance of the medals awarded, stating that they represent more than just metal worn on the chest; rather, they are symbols of recognition for hard work, dedication, and effort.

The outgoing Battle Group XL, commanded by Col Topher Magino, deployed to Somalia in January 2024 successfully degraded Al-Shabaab and denied the group freedom of action.

The Deputy Uganda Contingent Commander, Col Christopher Tumwine on behalf of Uganda Contingent Commander, Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga highlighted the achievements of the outgoing battle group in neutralising the Al Shabab and mentoring the Somali Security Forces.

“I commend Battle Group XL for their remarkable achievements. Thank you for your dedication to supporting the Federal Government of Somalia and for upholding the principles of peace and security,” said Col Tumwine.

Present at the medal award ceremony were AUSSOM Uganda Contingent Commander, Brig Gen Joseph Musoke Ssemwanga, Contingent Administrative Officer, Col John Mark Ssemanda, and the incoming commander of Battle Group XLIII, Col Robert Koch.
